Arrival & Set up camp

Pitch tents

It had been raining all afternoon when we arrived in Camp, thankfully we had chosen a spot across the far side of the field which was generally flat but with a slight fall to allow water to drain away, and it was not too wet. It was also close to the service road and service block, and so easy to unload.  We had several Guides in camp with us who had not camped with us before and were novices at putting up tents.

We had brought with us one of the Leaders pop up Gazebos which was great to put up and  unload kit under. We had also brought with us a large White party tent which was to be our main activity station for the weekend. This was fantastic as it allowed us to keep most of the gear in it, with plenty of space and allowed tents to be 'just bedrooms - free of wet gear' .

We were also very thankful of several parents who stayed for 2 hours whilst we put tents up and got ourselves sorted.

7.00

pm

Camp Opening Ceremony

We all sat down in our new White Tent, and the Leaders explained the set up of the camp and where everything was.

7.30

pm

Walk around camp

We went for a walk around the camp site and were shown where everything was, and where the Activities were we would be taking part in, where the no go areas were without leaders, and where our Cubs and Scouts were camping just across the field.

When we got back we had a Territory battle with our Scouts, They were the Baddies, We were the Goodies and the field in between was a 'ravine'.

9.30

pm

Supper

For Supper we cooked Hot Dogs and onions and had lots of sauce

Saturday After Supper we had free time to set up our Tents and beds, chat and sleep, we didn't need much persuading
8.00 am Rise and shower It took some of us some time to get up. We had a wash, none of us wanted to shower, there were spiders in there.....
8.30   Breakfast As it took most of us so long to get up, we were late cooking Breakfast,, doing the washing up and it got later still.
10.00

till 1.00

Abseiling We met our Instructor Ian over by the Red Wall, our Leader Bev had done lots of Abseiling before so she kitted us all up and manned the base of the ropes, whilst Ian controlled the safety rope at the top. Only about 1/3 of us had Abseiled before so this was a new and exciting experience for us. Some of us were scared. But Ian was very patient with us and talked us how to get onto the rope and lean out, and walk down the rock, and Bev encouraged us from below.  When some of us were too scared to go down Ian came down with us and Bev controlled the safety rope.
Meanwhile Jo and Kayla looked after the equipment and watched and did their David Bailey impersonations, have a look at our photo's

1.00 pm Walk Back We walked back a different way around the campsite. Kayla and Jo had gone on to start to prepare lunch. We were all bouncing and full of energy so had a go of the Assault course on the way back.
1.30   Lunch We had Cheesy Oatcakes for our Lunch, nice and warm and filling, we were all ravenous after our exertions. We then had to Tidy cam, wash up and do our Duties
2.00 to 3.00   Mostly Lea Mill After lunch we walked down to and along the river, swollen with all the rain to a Mill on the other side of the site. This was a working Mill and it was supposed to be open for the day.  But because of the rain the path had flooded over, so it had been closed to the general public. We were OK though, we all had our Wellies on and Leaders with us and it was great to paddle through the water and a long tunnel to the other side.
We stop off to watch some of the Scouts kayaking, then decide to paddle up the stream and see how far as we can get. We take our wellies off to wade, its great, there is a very muddy bit where the water had got stuck in a bend in the river, the Mud is knee deep.... Guides love mud... we give the Leaders time to get out of the way and then...yippee ...Mud everywhere. Brill
6.00 pm Cook Tea Some of us do Duties, tidying tents, and setting tables, whilst some of the others help Cook Tea - Chicken Paella in a great big pan, enough for all of us.
8.00 pm Cam fire The Scouts and Cubs had invited us to their Camp Fire but we wanted to have our own.  We all got our camp chairs out and sat around an Oil drum, then put some pallets on it to burn, it was hot. We cooked marshmallows over the fire, and joined in some of the Scouts songs, but just chatted and chilled out.
10.30 pm Super Some of us had soup for supper, some of us were so tired we went to bed.
Sunday
8.30   Rise and Wash There were still spiders in the toilet block so we just washed before Breakfast. We had a cooked breakfast
9.00   Duties For duties this morning as well as washing up all the dishes, we also had to tidy our tents and pack our bedding and some of our bags.
As this was Bev's camp assesment camp , a woman arrived to inspect the camp and talk to her, which made us late for our first activity.

Assault Course So when we got there someone else was already on the Assault Course and would not get off. We walked back along the river to the rope swing.
11.00   Tents We started striking some of the tents and putting them away before lunch, then we had lunch.
1.30   Pm After lunch we went for a walk to put stuff in cars, and then the Leaders went to complain about the Assault course and pay camp fees.
Craft: In the afternoon we all sat in the tent and made bead bracelets, crocodiles, and butterflies, and went to the camp shop to get some souvenirs.
4.00     Parents came to pick us up and we had to go home.
